Faces Of The Fall

I had the chance to write an article for the autumn edition of my college magazine last November and of course i chose to do a beauty feature!! Although I may not agree with some of the views in the article, I was told I had to make it relevant to student life so had to keep in mind that some people as shocking as it may seem, may not be as makeup obsessive as me or be willing to spend as much on the habbit as I do!! Here is my effort :) :

As temperatures cool and the days darken, our makeup follows. Gone are the lazy days of summer with barely there make-up, sunkissed skin and tousled waves. Throw out the cardinal rule of lips or eyes, lash on that lipstick and smoke out those eyes. Autumn/winter 2008 beauty trends include glam goth, vampy vixen and heroin chic. The infamous YSL black lipgloss sold out at an alarming rate across the globe, the unlikely favourite was then relaunched due to popular demand, confirming this season’s hottest trends are truly upon us. With a reaction this big, its no surprise that several cosmetic companies cashed in on the trend including affordable brand; Miss Sporty, with perfect colour lipstick in extreme black for a mere €3.65.

No longer confined to angry adolescents, glam goth will soon be brought to the mainstream and invading our streets. This is definitely a more sophisticated take on the look, key elements include porcelain skin, dark stained lips in grape and wine tones, sculpted cheeks and sexy smudged eyes.

Although Mac was the official makeup of New York fashion week and a firm favourite among the professionals, the average students budget may not stretch to €30 for a lipstick alone. A couple of hours grafting in the local supermarket may not support the beauty regimes of the a-list. There are amazing purse- friendly alternatives available on the high street. Forget the nightmares of your preteens, drug store makeup is no longer something to fear. Brands such as Bourjois, Barry M, Revlon and Rimmel have been forced to up the ante in order to compete with the likes of cosmetic giants Mac, Nars, Chanticalle and Chanel. Affordable brands are now much better quality with longer lasting formulas, improved consistency, pigmentation and a wider range of colours. You can now afford to experiment and still get a round of drinks in on a Saturday night!

All you need to complete the look is every season’s hottest accessory- confidence, and a little creativity. Magazines, beauty blogs and Youtube are great places to find inspiration. Spritz on a woody fall friendly fragrance such as the newest offering by Kate Moss ‘velvet hour’, sling on your favourite pair of heels and prepare to compete with the runway elite!

Great budget beauty buys include Barry M nail paint in ‘115’ €4.50 which rivals the adored Chanel ‘ rouge noir’ €15, Superdrug brand MEMEME ‘ beat the blues’ skin illuminator €6.50 is a great alternative the cult following Benefit ‘ high beam’ €24 and light and bright under eye concealer also by MEMEME €9.99 is an obvious homage to the sought after industry must have YSL touché éclat €30. Swap Nars laguna for Rimmel sunshimmer and replace Mac studio fix fluid with Revlon colourstay. Unleash the savvy shopper inside you!
